John B Says UDP Plan Won’t Help
posted (December 4, 2018)
Switching now to politics, PUP Leader John Briceno today weighed in on last week’s announcement that Prime Minister Dean Barrow will wait until very close to the end of this term of government to step down.

That's a change in plans because he was originally scheduled to step down in mid - 2019. It is widely felt that he is doing so to keep his party form splintering under a new leader, either John Saldivar or Patrick Faber.

Today Briceno said it hardly matters how long Barrow sticks around, the end result will be the same:..

John Briceno, PUP Leader
"It is very clear that the UDP has no succession plan. There were 3 presumed candidates for leadership. One did not make it through the gate. He lost in his convention in Port Loyola and now these two. I mean the fighting between them is so bad. It's embarrassing how they are behaving. So there is no succession plan and the best they can do I think is that by the present prime minister has to stay on, they can link their way to the end to 2020. It doesn't matter what they do, it doesn't matter if the prime minister stays on today or leave tomorrow or at the end of the term. I think it's a conclusion that the Belizean people are tired of the government and they want to get them out of Belmopan as quickly as possible."

We should note that succession is a common crisis in Belize's mass parties, evidenced by the fact that this is Briceno’s second stint as leader since 2008 - and the party remains on the longest losing streak in its storied history.
