Remembering Buju in Belize
posted (December 7, 2018)
Jamaican reggae artist and icon Buju Banton has been released from prison in the USA after serving 8 years. The Jamaica Gleaner reports, quote, "Buju Banton has been released from prison…at the McRae Correctional institution. An officer at the institution said the entertainer whose given name is Mark Myrie, was let out earlier today.

The United States embassy in Kingston is tight-lipped about when the reggae superstar Buju Banton will be returned to (Jamaica)." End quote. Buju is now 45, but he visited Belize in September of 2003 when he was just 30 - and at that time, the man called "Gargamel" was edgy, combative and unapologetic. Jules Vasquez spoke to him then, and here's a portion of that interview:..

Again that interview from 2003. Buju is now believed to at a Deportation Center - awaiting return to Jamaica. Reggae fans are eagerly expecting a return to form - and Buju has issued a statement saying, quote "Having survived, I want to share the good news and strength of my music. I just want to continue making music, which I've devoted my life to."
