posted (December 10, 2018)
A Guatemalan farm caretaker was hacked to death in Cristo Rey Village in Cayo. Dima Gregorio was at the farm when his brother in law, Filiberto Itche and his wife got into argument. Gregorio stepped in as peacemaker and Itche chopped him to his hands, head and back. Courtney Weatherburne has the story.

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
A blot of Dimas Gregorio's dark dried blood marks the spot where he took his final breaths.

Gregorio was chopped to death on Friday night at the San Pablo farm in Cristo Rey, Cayo.

Gregorio was drinking with his wife along with his brother in law Filiberto Itche and Itche's wife. Our information is that Itche and his wife got into an argument and Gregorio intervened.

Rodale Aguirre, Farm Owner
"What I know is that they got into an argument because the guy, his brother in law wanted to get into an argument with his wife. He tried to avoid the fighting."

According to police, jealously sparked the fight.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, CIB - Eastern Division
"We understand is that it is a dispute amongst them where one was accusing the other of having a relationship with his common law wife."

Reporter
"With Mr Itche's Common law wife?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Yes."

Reporter
"Was alcohol involved?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Yes, the entire four persons that were there, the two males and the two females, apparently they were socializing."

Itche and his wife moved in with Gregorio two weeks ago because Itche didn't have a job or a place to stay. All four of them were close, so Gregorio's murder shocked Aguirre.

Rodale Aguirre, Farm Owner
"They take their couple drinks, they talk together, they work together, I don't know what happened to the guy, what I heard that night is that the other guy was out in the village, I don't know if he was drinking or socializing with anyone else that is what I basically know."

"His brother in law was very talkative, never shows signs of wanting to abuse my worker of anyone else."

Whether it was too much alcohol, jealously or both, a cherished farmer and a father of three is now dead.

Rodale Aguirre, Farm Owner
"I am sorry to hear the news because he was my good worker, hardworking guy, that is why I occupy him most of the time."

Courtney Weatherburne, reporter
"How long had he been working for you?"

Rodale Aguirre, Farm Owner
"He was working for about a year with me. I love his work, since I studied agriculture and he did my work."

Gregorio leaves behind 3 children. His body will be taken to Guatemala for burial. Police believe Itche has absconded to Guatemala.
