Opposition Diaspora Bill Goes To House
posted (December 11, 2018)
Tomorrow will see the last House Meeting of the year.

But It's going to be the first sitting at which PUP Area Rep. Kareem Musa is going to push for his private member's bill. As we've told you, he is hoping to get bi-partisan support to amend the Representation of the People's Act, which would allow for Belizeans living abroad to vote in the Referendum on the ICJ, which is scheduled for April 10th, 2019.

He's already done all the necessary preparations for the bill, and he formally submitted it yesterday to National Assembly Clerk Eddie Webster. But, there is a potential hurdle that it must pass, for it to even be tabled tomorrow in the House of Representatives. He explained it to the press today, and he appealed to the Government at least allow the conversation to take place on the national stage:

Hon. Kareem Musa - Area Rep., Caribbean Shores
"The bill has been formally lodged at the National Assembly. Now, what the law provides is that after it is lodged, soon thereafter, whenever there is the first ordinary sitting of the House of Representatives, the bill is to be read for the first time. Tomorrow, as with many other House Meetings, it is referred to as a special sitting of the House. The law, like I said, allows for it to be read at an ordinary sitting. Now, my concern with that is when will we have an ordinary sitting of the House, because the last several Houses Meetings have been special sittings. So, that is my number 1 primary concern. So, it is my hope, because at the end of the day, this bill will require bi-partisan support. At the last House Meeting, I took the liberty of crossing the floor, and I gave the Prime Minister a cover letter in which I sought an audience with him in order to discuss this bill. I enclosed a copy of the bill because no doubt, we're going to need the support of the Government's side in order for this bill to pass. And so, I don't want to cause any trouble. I just humbly requesting that this bill sees the light of day, hopefully tomorrow, even though it is a Special Sitting, that they can treat it as an ordinary sitting for the purposes of discussing this very important bill. We are very strapped for time. As you know, the referendum comes up on April 10th, 2019, and so, this is something that I think needs to be ventilated."
