Caledonia Cane Roads In Crisis
posted (December 12, 2018)
And those high costs - especially of fuel - directly affect cane farmers - who are getting very low prices for the sugar they sell on the world market.

Today the member for Corozal Southeast said the government has to urgently do something:..

Hon. Florencio Marin- PUP Corozal Southeast
"Just today some of the cane farmers from the Village of Caledonia, a village that I represent, a village that is UDP, that stands alone by itself with solid UDP support, the farmers have not had one upgrading of their road, not one preparation of that road for this cane season that will be starting tomorrow. Today, they protested, madam speaker, from that particular area. I would like to ask the Prime Minister to please get some repairs to these cane roads because it is quite critical; the safra starts tomorrow. Prime Minister, the price is really low. Believe you me, we are all feeling it. Any help the farms can get, they need it."

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow- Prime Minister
"We have already allocated monies for sugar road repairs and I know that the monies are over at the Minister of Workers already. So, $300 thousand, can I say, to start with because if you do a little more…I'm sorry? No man, you got $300 thousand last year didn't you? Well, then you are getting more this year."
