An Urban Garden Rejuvenates City
posted (December 13, 2018)

The Anglican Cathedral College has an urban garden. It is part of the multi million dollar downtown rejuvenation project which seeks to uplift and beautify public spaces. We spoke to school principal Ismael Requena about this initiative.

Ismael Requena  - Principal of ACC
"This project is a collaboration between ACC, the Taiwanese embassy, the BTB and the ministry of agriculture. It is part of the downtown rejuvenation project and we here at ACC are very elated and in fact, thankful for this project; because it does bring a multifaceted approach in that it involves our students, our community and even our church. In fact, all the produce that we will get from this will be donated to the soup kitchen, which we... St. John's Cathedral soup kitchen feeds over 100 people every week on Tuesday.  So, that's part of the community outreach; so, it is a pleasure and an honor for us as a school to be able to contribute. Our students, in the same way, get a life-long experience in that they start their own garden in their backyard, so, they can produce their own food. We are thankful to all the contributors to this Project."

Albert Avilla
"We collaborated with the Ministry of Agriculture and I think they did about six other gardens at Belize City schools. From our project standpoint, this is the only one we are going to do, however, the long term vision of this particular project is for us to use it as sort of training ground for other projects."

Arman Pollard - 1st Form ACC Student
"We wanted to help the community and the soup kitchen here. We really love it and we love working on the garden."

Amar Sutherland
"This taught me that I can plant things, reap them, eat and donate them anywhere."

This is a partnership between the Belize City House of Culture and Taiwan.
