Carlos Raul Says Real Threat in Sarstoon Is Organized Crime
posted (December 17, 2018)
AND, after conducting over an hour long session of interviews at "Asi Es" - the media rushed through thick traffic in Guatemala City - to the Belizean Embassy - where former foreign minister Carlos Raul Morales appeared to field questions from the 10 journalists.

The team pressed him mostly on the Sarstoon Protocol which he agreed to as Foreign Minister in Turkey in April of 2017. Morales changed the argument though; he said it's not about protocol, or territory, it's about organized crime. Here's how he put it:..

Carlos Raul Made Protocol Pledge In Turkey, So Why Back Out Now

And now we go back to Guatemala City where a large part of the Belizean press corps is encamped tonight - gauging public sentiment in that country about the upcoming referendum in Belize. You've already heard from former Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales tonight - speaking on various subjects. But, as we told you earlier, the media pressed him mostly on the Sarstoon Protocol - which the Guatemalans agreed to, but now refuse to finalize. Jules Vasquez pressed him on it when he said that Guatemala only wants peace.:

ACP Pushes Guatemala on Protocol, Carlos Raul Says Que Viva ICJ

We also pressed Morales to talk about the international pressure that Guatemala continues to come under because it has not completed this very same protocol. Again, he held the state line: first to the ICJ:

Jules Vasquez will have much more form Guatemala City in tomorrow's news.

Police Give Christmas Safety Tips

We're only 8-days away from Christmas, and you might be one of those early birds who's already gone out and purchased all those presents, or your ham and Turkey.

But, for all those last-minute shoppers, the police department is currently engaging in their Christmas anti-crime campaign. It's a month-long initiative where the department steps up their presence in the major commercial centers to try and minimize the number of burglaries, robberies, and theft.

They, however, cannot do it all alone, and they're relying on you to do your part to keep yourself safe during the Christmas season. The Deputy Police Commissioner had a few tips that he wanted to share with the public, and here's what he had to say:

Chester Williams- Deputy ComPol, Operations
"While we do our part, through our preventative patrol efforts, I want to call upon those persons who will be busy out there doing their own personal shopping to also do what they can to be able to ensure their own personal security and that includes trying as much as they can not to walk around with large sums of money. Do not go to the ATM and walk out of the ATM with your cash in your hand counting. If you go to the ATM, make sure the door is locked behind you that if someone comes, they have to have a card to be able to go in. Try not to move around with valuables on your, your chain or bracelet, or these other things that will attract criminals to you. Try to move around in groups of more than one; do not park your vehicle in dark areas far away, where you have to walk through a dark area to get to your vehicle, because again, the potential does exist for persons who may want to rob you to go and wait for you in the dark area. And in terms of the merchants, we try to encourage them to do as much deposits during the day as they can to be able to minimize the amount of cash that they keep inside their store and also say that through Mr. Mariano, Mr. Gillett and Mr. Moody, we're offering free escort for shop owners who want to go to the bank and deposit money. So, if you have a large sum of cash that you want to take to the bank and you do not trust to go to the bank, you can call either Queen Street or Raccoon Street Police Stations and we'll provide the escort for you to be able to take your money to the bank safely. And we prefer to do this to prevent you being robbed, than for you to be robbed and we try to investigate."

The Christmas anti-crime campaign started at the beginning of this month, and ends on January 1st. If there is need, it may be extended to January 15th.
