Uncle Sam Keeping an Eye on Outcome of Belize Referendum
posted (December 18, 2018)
So, as you heard, the Guatemalans don't want to say where their boundary is. And neither did former Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales yesterday. What he did say is that the US is watching Belize closely to see what will come out of Belize's referendum:

Carlos Raul Morales, Former Foreign Minister, Guatemala
"We really hope that Belize will vote yes. Because it is going to be more easy. If Belize vote no, we cannot live like this forever. It's not possible to still live with this situation between both countries, because we do not have border. This is a fact and you will realize there is not a line as we have with Mexico, with Honduras and we have with El Salvador. With these 3 countries there is a line of 10 meters wide and the length of the whole border that define the border between the countries. If Belize vote no, from my personal position, we have to accept it, but the government of Belize, doesn't matter if it's the UDP or the PUP or another political party, they have to still continue looking for a solution. The international communities is very interesting, United States in particular is very interested that Belize and Guatemala gives a solution to this issue. The international community is very interested, very respectful - they are asking us to go to the International Court of Justice to give a solution to this situation."

The media's trip to Guatemala City - sponsored by the US - concluded today.
