The Turneffe Atoll team also launched two other reports entitled Storm Mitigation Value and Blue Carbon Value. Shal told us more about those reports.

"So we have a Blue Carbon Value report which this the carbon sequestration value of Turneffe and it is in the millions. The Blue carbon value report is what is the carbon sequestration value of Turneffe in terms of the reef and the mangroves and then we put a dollar figure because it is an economic valuation and it is in the millions of dollars. That means that it helps to stabilize the climate and help to absorb the carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. The other report has to do with the storm mitigation value of the Turneffe Atoll, it is a very long Atoll so it has storm mitigation value which means it helps to protect especially Belize City, and we use an approach called avoided damages so if Turneffe wasn't there and there was a storm we would suffer very serious damage and again the value to that protection that it provides is like an umbrella sort of when storms come and it saves us a lot of money by protecting us and it is over $300 million dollars annually."
