Yesterday Belize and other UN General Assembly member states agreed on a new international framework called The Global Compact on Refugees.
This collective decision aims to decrease the effects of the mass displacement of refugees in order to benefit both the refugees and the host countries through investment for education and health services. This is to help refuges to lead productive lives while in exile. The compact will also address the environmental impact of hosting refugees and promote the use alternative energy.
Belize has also joined Mexico and four other Central American countries in a regional refugee response mechanism called the MIRPS or the Comprehensive Regional Protection and Solutions Framework.
