Former Guat Congressman Asks Why Belize Signed Special Agreement

And while Elrington will not relent from the position that he was misquoted - another Guatemalan politician we spoke to questioned why Elrington signed the special agreement in the first place. Cesar Augusto del Aguila is a former Guatemalan Congressman, and now a practicing attorney and talk show host.

When we told him all the misgivings Belizeans have about going to the ICJ - and the uncertainty of what Guatemala will claim - he asked why we signed the special agreement in the first place:

Cesar Augusto del Aguila, Former Guatemalan Congressman
"I can't say exactly because I don't have all the relevant documents on hand. What I can say is that there is an issue that if we don't resolve it in this century it will have to be resolved in the next century or it will be in some distant time but it is something that, in my opinion, has to be submitted to the judges for them to decide who is right and that every country respects their decision; and I believe that is what was done here [Special Agreement]."

"The politics of External Relations in Guatemala is governed by the executive power, as established in the constitution of the Republic. And the executive power is responsible, according to the constitution of Guatemala, to resolve whatever dispute that could exist with Belize. Now, if there are whatever feelings in Belize's population, well, why did you sign this?"
