Which Is the Real Guatemalan Map?
posted (December 20, 2018)
As you've been seeing in the news since the start of the week - we interviewed a whole lot of folks over in Guatemala City earlier this week. But we couldn't get a single one of them to tell us what portion of Belizean territory the Guatemalans are actually going to claim, when they go to the International Court of Justice, and what is the official position on the map of Belize. Former Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales says Belize is included in the map of Guatemala with a dotted line as a matter of law.

But according to former congressman Cesar Augusto del Aguila,

The map of Guatemala does not contemplate the Belizean territory. Here's how he put it:

Lic. Cesar Augusto del Aguila- Ex Congressman
"The map of Guatemala does not contemplate the Belizean territory. You see it and it doesn't include it. Secondly, we have become much more civilized in Guatemala and that is why we believe that it is the tribunals that manage the Public International Law, in this case the Court of International Justice, which is part of the UN, that should decide."

Reporter:
"However we have noticed many maps, my colleague even commented that a police vehicle had Guatemalan map including Belize. In other cases we have seen that they use a dotted line that, I think, was the official line of the Government in recent years. But, for example, in the Immigration in Flores, one of the offices of Immigration at the airport in Flores had a map that includes the country of Belize. So, that has not been removed from entities or governmental offices."

Lic. Cesar Augusto del Aguila- Ex Congressman
"Evidently it should not be like that. The official map of Guatemala does not contemplate the territory of Belize. And right now, as far as I understand, I might be mistaken, there is no border, only an adjacency zone."
