The Salvation Army’s War for Christmas Cheer
posted (December 20, 2018)
850 needy people received Christmas food hampers today thanks to The Salvation Army. These packages include many non-perishable food items and were handed over to different families at The Salvation Army's 3 Belize City locations. The care packages were made possible by donations from numerous businesses and the general public. We spoke with Major Joliker Leandre from The Salvation Army about the sharing event.

Major Joliker Leandre, Commander, Salvation Army
"Well, as you would have noticed, we have kettles all over the place and persons go into various stores, drop in coins and checks and whatever they have. And that is the accumulation of everything; everyone's contribution made it possible today. We have started with distributions from the 6th of December and we are continuing until the 29th of December, so, after Christmas we'll still have distributions. Not only do we have food packages distributed, but we have visitations to various institutions. As it relates to today, we have distributions at 3 different locations, here at 41 regent street, 25 Castle Street and also on 12 cemetery road."

Reporter:
"How do you select the people who receive these packages?"

Major Joliker Leandre:
"The individuals, they come, we have the notice put out and those who are really in need would come and register. The registration was on the 5th of December, for Belize City and the persons came and registered."

"Today is Belize City, then tomorrow we'll have in Hattieville, then the 29th we'll have in Georgeville and San Ignacio and those areas. We don't have anybody in Orange walk, but these are the locations. Then we have Maskall Saturday, we'll travel to Maskall to the community. Not only will we take food hampers, but also the children, we normally have gifts for them."

This program was kicked off with their annual Christmas party earlier this month, which catered to 1,950 children.
