Wilfred Against The World
posted (December 21, 2018)

Last night you saw our interview with Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington.  He was splitting hairs with the media - accusing us of misquoting him because he said there is a “possibilityâ€￾ that the Guatemalans could invade, and when we asked Carlos Raul Morales about his question, we  used the word “riskâ€￾.  Most folks would tell you that they’re interchangeable in this context - but Elrington maintains that we distorted his words.

In another section of our 52 minute interview, he said there are influential people who have been attempting to publicly undermine him ever since he took up the Foreign Affairs portfolio, and he’s ready to leave it behind, if called upon to do so:

Hon. Wilfred Elrington - Minister of Foreign Affairs
"I have no fear of being removed as Minister of Foreign Affairs - none whatsoever. I never coveted it, I never asked for it, it's a job that was given to me and I'm doing it but I could easily go home tomorrow and be as content tomorrow as I am today and I'm now 70 years old Jules, nobody can lash me. The people have been critical of me from day one are the same people who are critical of me now. They are some people you know Jules, who believe either because I'm too black or because I am not from a certain family I should not be the Minister of Foreign Affairs."

Jules Vasquez
"Do you think that if you were lighter skinned or Mestizo..."

Hon. Wilfred Elrington
"Jules I won't get into that, what I will tell you thought is that none of those who sought to denigrate me have been able to achieve anything more than I have been able to achieve, none. None, none, none. I chose to be in politics, not because it makes me more wealthy because it makes me poorer but it gives me less wealthy but it gives me a peace of mind because I know that at least I am actively involved in trying to bring my country to a safer place as possible."

On Monday we’ll have the last installment of our far ranging interview with Elrington.
