Elrington: Saying No To ICJ Helps Guatemala
posted (December 24, 2018)
And while Elrington blames his own people for biting on PUP bait, he blames Belizeans who want to vote "no" to the ICJ for playing into Guatemala's hands. Elrington said he finds it unbelievable:..

Hon. Wilfred Elrington - Minister of Foreign Affairs
"Now what I find interesting is that the Guatemalans who had for over 80 years said no to the ICJ. The British invited them from the 1930s. They refused and suddenly Belizeans are now saying, there are those among us who are now joining the Guatemala in this NO. I find that so amazing. It blows my mind and this is an extract from a fellow named Pablo Hurtado and this is the question that was asked of Pablo."

"If the vote was no in our referendum?"

Pablo Hurtado
"I think that will put Guatemala in a very good position, because it was shown to the international community that Guatemala is willing to solving it in a good way. That will change the international image that has been held. We don't want that, but that will put Guatemala in a very good perspective."

Hon. Wilfred Elrington
"So all these people who are saying no are in fact beating the Guatemala's drum as it were, because that is what the old Guatemalans use to do. The more modern ones, the ones who now understand that you get more dividend from peace and living side by side with harmony and getting resolve of old archaic claims, those know that you must go ahead. It must get resolved and to get resolve at the ICJ which is the best place. You can't have a better place."

Every Guatemalan personality we spoke to when we were there recently expressed self-satisfaction that over one million people in their country had voted "yes" to what they say is a peaceful resolution.
