Man Critical After Gun Dispute About A Horse
posted (December 28, 2018)
A brazen gunman was shot last night around news time. It happened on Fabers Road Extension. The alleged gunman, Frank Smith pulled up at Hislop's residence wielding a gun, supposedly in defense of his nephew who allegedly tried to steal a horse from the house. Yup, that's what the incident was about - a horse. I went to try and piece this story together.

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
Last night, Fabers road extension residents gathered outside after they heard gunshots. The shooting happened at this two story house. According to the home owner, this mare is at the center of all the commotion. The home owner told us off camera that a group of boys came to their house to steal the horse which caused another series of events.

Voice of: Resident
"Earlier in the evening they came along and while they came along they saw my son and the young man who takes care of the horse and when they saw them, they quickly turned back in a speed, hesitant and one of the young man ran and left his bicycle and after that, that was around when they came."

"The young man that ran and left his bicycle came back in the evening with his uncle and when they came they rode up to my stairs where my son was sitting, the young man who takes care of the horse, my brother in law and my nephew was standing there and the young man who run left his bike approached the young man and this is the young man uncle and the uncle went towards my garbage bin, take off a plastic bag with the gun and came towards my son and the other three young men that was sitting on the step and he came pointing the gun at them and with no hesitation my son and the young man ran."

They ran to the back of the house and the alleged gunman, Frank Smith, followed them. The home owner's son, Dennis Hislop, wrestled with Smith but his dad, Hislop Sr. intervened.

Voice of: Resident
"When we heard the commotion my husband came out with his licensed weapon, saw the commotion at the back and when my son saw his dad with the gun he left the gunman so my husband could get a hold of him. So when my husband saw him he point his license weapon at him and shot him and after that the gunman kept running."

Not before he fired several shots of his own. He missed. But Smith was hit to the neck and right cheek. The home owner said that since they bought the horse in September, these boy thieves have been after their horse.

Voice of: Resident
"They were very brave doing such thing and I find it very ironic that this type of thing could happen, we had reported this stealing of our horse many times to police when they stole the horse away."

Courtney Weatherburne, reporter
"Those boys are from this area you would say?"

Voice of: Resident
"No no they are not from this area, the one we found with the horse last Thursday, he is from Antelope Street Extension. They are from other areas but it is just for the horse they came."

"We had the horse at 8 miles when they stole it and the police had found it behind Gungulung area and they called my son and that is when he found his horse and brought it home. And then from there they came four times to attempt to steal him again, four times within that short space of time, within three weeks, they came four times to steal it, they got away twice with it and we found the horse back and the last night again."

They bought the horse as a gift for their 1 year old grandson. Although the baby is very fond of the horse, they may have to sell it.

Voice of: Resident
"He loves his horse, he love him because every morning when he wakes up, I would bring him outside and say here is your horsey, here is your horsey and he would look at it and get excited and stomping up because he wants to go."

"I find it hard to get rid of it but somehow that is our only option sell him back or do something because we don't want any problem in this area."

A police press release says Smith is in a critical condition. Smith has had several run-ins with the law. He was in the news in August for allegedly raiding a Cuban nurses' Northside apartment on and also assaulting her. He was charged with aggravated burglary in that case and charged for burglary in two other cases. Police recovered (3) 9mm expended shells from the scene.
