Highway Collision Sends Two Guardsmen To Hospital
posted (December 31, 2018)
Two coast guard officers, including cyclist Joslyn Chavarria were injured in an accident this morning around 11:00 near mile 9 and a half on the Western Highway. Coast Guard driver Ingrid Alcoser was at the wheel while Chavarria was in the pan of the pickup. They were heading to the coast guard headquarters when a cargo truck rear-ended them. No one was seriously hurt, but it caused a major bottleneck on the highway. After about an hour or so, police cleared the scene. The driver of the cargo truck told us off camera that another vehicle was in front of the coast guard truck and it stopped abruptly, trying to avoid hitting a cyclist. So when the coast guard truck stopped as well, the driver of the cargo truck pressed on his brakes. But, the brakes seems to have malfunctioned and he rammed into the coast guard truck. We spoke to the Lt. Commander of the coast guard, Gregory Soberanis on the scene.

Lt. Gregory Soberanis, Fleet Commander, Coast Guard
"Coast guard headquarters got a report that one of our vehicles were involved in a traffic accident. We came to the scene where we observed that our vehicle was rear- ended by a cargo truck. On arrival the first thing we did was to make sure our people were okay. Our driver sustained injuries. She was unable to move. She was stabilized by our chief medic until BERT arrived on scene and they did further stabilization on her and transported her to the hospital. The second passenger was also transported to the hospital. He sustained an abrasion to his forearms and so he also went to get check up at the hospital."

"The police are conducting their investigations, scenes of crimes were here and they processed the scene so we are pending the outcome of the investigation and we are going to know what transpired."

Our information is that both Alcoser and Chavarria were treated and release. Chavarria is expected to line up for tomorrow's race where is projected to be a contender.
