PM Suggests “Reform” Coming to “Very Top” of Police
posted (December 31, 2018)
Turning now to policing - crime continues to be a dominant force in our society, and in the news. 2018 will end with 143 murders, which is one more than last year's official count, but two less than our unofficial count. Whatever the case, it's reason for grim reflection: to lose more than 140 Belizeans every year to violent homicide is unspeakable.

In his new year's message, the Prime Minister did address crime with the usual boilerplate platitudes. But, then he referred to something else that may suggest a real change in approach. He used the word "reform" and said it will start at the very top - which is a telling remark when you consider the present Commissioner Allen Whylie is considered very status quo:

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"The Belize Police Department will remain the center piece of the effort to eliminate the triple scourge of gangs, guns and drugs. 2019 will therefore see a concentrated effort on the reform for a more effective Belize Police Department. This reform will start at the very top and permeate throughout all ranks. It will include better training, better administration and better resources. Will therefore optimistic about better results."

We'll wait and see what the top down reform refers to.
