Jailed for Jealously?
posted (January 4, 2019)
He's a BTL employee with a licensed weapon, but 39 year-old Garry Yearwood, brother of the well-known police officer, Fitzroy Yearwood, is locked down at the Belize Central Prison tonight - all because of a jealous dispute with his ex.

31 year-old Royann Riverol, reported to police that at around 8:00 on New Year's night she was driving toward Belize City with her mother and sister when she spotted Yearwood, who is her ex, heading in the opposite direction with a woman in his vehicle. She said she followed him to his Los Lagos home, and when he got out of the vehicle, she got out of hers, and that's when she and Yearwood got into an argument.

According to Riverol, she slapped Yearwood in the face, and that's when he allegedly pulled out his licensed 9mm pistol, pointed it at her, and said, "You don't know what I would do to you."

She said that she feared for her life, and so, she immediately went to the Ladyville Police Station and reported the incident. Now, never mind that he was confronted on his property and allegedly used his licensed gun, Police arrested and charged Yearwood with aggravated assault - which is an automatic remand offence.

He was taken to court today, but before the arraignment took place, police stood it down. Court reports suggest that police may have been reconsidering proceeding against him, because a witness was identified who gave an alternate version of this confrontation in which it was asserted that Yearwood never actually pulled his weapon on Riverol. In fact, Yearwood said that he did no such thing, and that his ex-common-law wife made a false report against him.

But, it didn't make a difference, and in the afternoon, he was arraigned, and due to the nature of this offense, he was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison until March 7th, 2019. His attorney, Leisja Barrow told us that she will move to make a bail petition to the Supreme Court on Monday. She says she also plans to sue the police for wrongful detention.
