The Krooman Lagoon Plan Still Live?
posted (January 8, 2019)
Krooman Lagoon is one of those communities in Lake I of major concern, due to deplorable housing setups. Well, in the last quarter of last year the mayor visited the community to discuss the potential of a rehabilitation project in the zone.

But his plan is to relocate the entire community- a pretty big deal for residents who have spent all their life there. And the problem with this project again is financing. Mayor Wagner gave us an update on that project.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor
"First we wrote a project proposal to the 5Cs to seek a grant funding, because before you can't move people off the Krooman Lagoon you have to acquire land to place them and so that grant funding if approved will give us the ability to acquire the necessary land to relocate those persons that make their homes over the Krooman Lagoon and thereafter when we are able to relocate them, then we will have the ability to them rehabilitate the Krooman Lagoon into its natural habitat. Which is it would form a part of the tourism tour of Belize City where people could do bird watching, you could go and take a tour in that area and thereafter the other component is the group out of London who has committed to us to funding the construction of the homes."

Reporter
"What has the conversation been like with the residents and are they engaged to the level whereby should the funds be approved and everything go smoothly, that they would be willing to leave without any kind of problem from that particular area?"

Bernard Wagner, Mayor
"Some of the preliminary conversations we had, very informal of course, we had ask a couple of the residents would they be willing to move or make their homes elsewhere and their response was clearly, Mayor if we have a better place to go we would be willing to move. Of course that is preliminary. We would have to do some consultations with them. We would have to continue that conversation.'
