Man Jumped To Avoid Collision, Ended Up Crushed
posted (January 10, 2019)

A man is dead after he jumped out of a 10 wheeler truck and was crushed under it. It happened yesterday afternoon around 3:30 at the Steadfast Village bridge - which is at mile 17 on the Hummingbird Highway. Now this isn't like the usual accidents we report on because the victim, Chinese National 36 year old Jian Wu Yan jumped to his death because he thought the 10 wheeler truck he was in, was going to collide with another truck. Based on eyewitnesses, it was a costly misjudgment. Courtney Weatherburne has more.

Jian Wu Yan lay in pain and shock on the Steadfast Village bridge as first responders tried to stabilize him. He had been run over by a 10 wheeler cargo truck. His colleague was driving the truck and he was the passenger. They were heading towards Dangriga.

When they arrived at the bridge another vehicle in the opposite direction was also crossing the bridge. The truck driver then pressed on the brakes to avoid hitting the oncoming vehicle but it didn't work. Fortunately, the other driver reversed.

Javier Ramirez - Chairman
"When the red pickup drive into the bridge, the truck was coming down and he couldn't stop and when he reach at the entrance of the bridge he is trying to tell the next driver to come out of the way so the next driver from the red pickup, these are people from Orange Walk too, the entire family was in there so he just decide to stop quick and reverse".

But during that time Yan jumped out of the vehicle and he was crushed under the cargo truck.

Courtney Weatherburne
"I guess he get frighten?

Javier Ramirez
"He get jumpy and jump, I mean the jumpiness that he get he just jump out and his same partner run over him."

Courtney Weatherburne
"But if he was calm and stayed in the vehicle he would have been fine because the other red truck was reversing."

Javier Ramirez
"Yes the red truck move out the way quick, it was F-150, it came out quick out of his way and that is how it happens, it is just a freak accident."

As you saw, Yan was alive when the first responders arrived but he died around 6:00 at the Southern Regional Hospital. Yan worked at several Belmopan Chinese stores. Our information is that his wife and child live in Cayo.
