posted (January 10, 2019)

And while the driver of the cargo truck remains in police detention, one thing that police will have to decide is whether or not to charge him. After all, Wu Yan died in a very peculiar set of circumstances that are not entirely the driver’s fault. In a press conference with police today, Head of NCIB gave us the official account of the accident.

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
“A Vehicle being driven by Hui Wan Tan, 36 years Chinese businessman. The vehicle was a cargo truck and it was south bound. And according to Tan, when being interviewed, whilst being south bound and approaching one of those narrow bridges a vehicle was coming from the opposite direction which had already been on the bridge travelling in his direction and he applied break and breaks failed. As a result, his passenger one Jian Wu Yan, 36 years of a Belmopan address, who was the only passenger travelling along with him, fearing for an imminent accident jumped from the moving vehicle and hit his head on the bridge and fell under the vehicle which eventually ran over him before still colliding into the oncoming vehicle. As a result he was taken to the southern regional hospital where he died. The driver of that vehicle is detained pending this investigation."

“In cases like these, in your experience, has a charge stuck to the driver? In cases like these where the victim actually jumps out of a moving vehicle.â€￾

ACP Joseph Myvette
“Well, that will be determined based on the evidence that is gathered whether charges will be forthcoming immediately or whether or not those matters will be referred to the DPP for her directive."

36 year old Hui Wan Tan remains in police custody pending the outcome of the investigation.
