Getting Down To Details on Beatdown Investigation
posted (January 10, 2019)

Two nights ago we told you about how, now Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams broke the impasse that was holding back a criminal investigation into the San Pedro Beatdown of Jamir Leal.

Having met personally with the family of Leal, after two failed attempts from Professional Standards Branch, Williams convinced the family to cooperate in pressing criminal charges against the two cops, possibly saving the police department a costly law suit.

It has been two days since, so today we asked the commanding officer of the Criminal Investigations Branch if there has been any progress in that matter. He told us they are doing ground work at the moment to investigate all crimes that were committed that night, and he made extra emphasis on all.

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City
"Yes that matter is being dealt with criminally, personnel from Belize City are travelling to San Pedro to gather all the necessary evidence so that thereafter we can compile a file and then we'll decide who all will be charged because as we recall, it is one incident that lead to another incident, so it is something that we have to gather all the evidence and from there we will decide who all will be charged in regards to that."

Reporter
"Can you say whether your department has received these statements from the police officers in question and whether charges will be laid on the two young men?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"I know that the charges will be levied depends on what the doctor certified the medical form to be. We are in possession of those medical forms already but as I tell you, it is one incident that lead to another so that is why we are conducting an investigation and we need to go back to the island to get all the necessary evidence so that as I mentioned who will be charged, will be charged."

Emmanuel Pech
"But the investigation is being conducted in both matters. The brawl at the bar and the beat down..."

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"Yes."

In the meantime PC's Rowley and Medina, remain on interdiction.
