No Clues on Motorbike Gunman
posted (January 10, 2019)

And while police continue to follow several leads on the Martinez case, they are completely empty handed as it relates to the shooting incident in Orange Walk last two weeks. As viewers may recall 28 year old Llemmont Wade and 21 year old Pablo Senon Reyes were shot at by a person on motorcycle while walking on Muffles Street. Both men were injured. Now although police had previously said that they were familiar with the parties at play their investigations have remained inconclusive and no one has been arrested and charged. Here is what they told us today.

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"It is still an ongoing investigation, there are no new leads."

Reporter
"When you reach a roadblock like this, does it mean that the investigation stalls until new information is gotten? What is the procedure following that?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Well we do still continue to follow the investigation, we don't just sit and wait for new information to come forward, we are following other information in relation to this to see how we can bring these matters to a close."

Reporter
"It was said at a previous press briefing that the police or the investigators know who the suspects are but still can't proceed."

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Well it is then that we will have to gather sufficient evidence in order to proceed against those persons concerned and that is what we are in the process of doing."

Reporter
"Were they ever taken into custody for question?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"I cannot say at this point in time, I will have to verify that."

Police say that both Wade and Reyes are known gang affiliates.

Mitchell Charged For Rear Ending Motorbike

Belmopan resident Andrew Mitchell was arrested and charged for the Western Highway accident that claimed the life of Salomon Ramirez. He was charged with with Manslaughter by Negligence, Causing Death by Careless Conduct and Drove Motor Vehicle Without Due Care and Attention. As we told you, 31 year old Andrew Mitchell was driving an SUV towards the capital but between miles 27 and 28 he crashed into the rear end of  Salomon Ramirez’s Lifan motorcycle which had no rear lights.  As a result of the collision, Mitchell lost control of his Toyota four runner and flip several times landing about 50 feet off the shoulder of the highway.

Crime Front Quiets Down

And the reason you heard mostly updates today from police is simply because it has been a relatively quiet week as it relates to crime in the country; which is very good news considering we got off to a bad start at the beginning of the year. And as for all the older cases in the Belize District, police have yet to make a breakthrough in any of their cases. Apart from a few new clues in the disappearance of fisherman Greg Dillon last month there hasn’t been anything much.

HIV Report Shows Belize Prevalence As High As Haiti

The Ministry of Health has released the HIV surveillance report for 2016.  The 18 page document seems hastily prepared and does not offer any historical analysis, but it does have a few useful facts.

Notably, a UNAIDS metric called Spectrum4 calculates the 2016 HIV prevalence in Belize as 1.9 in those between the ages of 15 to 49 years.  This is higher than the Caribbean Region average of 1.2 and Latin America’s of 0.5.

When compared with countries like Jamaica, which is at 1.8, Belize is tied at the bottom with Haiti at 1.9.  Although Belize’s reported HIV rates are decreasing Spectrum estimates that it is increasing and we are not identifying these new infections.

In 2017, there were 223 newly diagnosed cases of HIV in Belize with 99 females and 124 males.

Belize, Stann Creek and the Cayo districts  - in that order - have the highest rate of HIV infection.
