A 26 year old Southern Emergency Services ambulance driver was killed in an accident early this morning. It happened before dawn this morning between miles 10 and 11 on the Southern Highway - near Silk Grass village. The victim is Belmopan resident Khalil Reyes - and he flew out of an ambulance which plunged into a drain. Another man - his co worker - was in the ambulance with him but police say they have not established who was driving at the time of the accident. Here is what they know so far.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch
"This morning sometime shortly before 5 am, Dangriga police was called to an area between miles 10 and 11 on the Southern highway where they observed a red and white ambulance being operated by Southern Emergency Services on the right hand side of the road when traveling north, somewhere in the vicinity of the Hopkins junction with extensive damage to it's front portion. Also seen was a clear complexion male person who seemed to be lifeless with a portion of his right foot severed. His name was learned to be one Khalil Reyes, 26 year old of a Belmopan address. According to the other person who was in the ambulance with him, one Herson Chavez is that they were somewhere in the vicinity of Maya Center Village socializing and had left there sometime after 11pm and according to him, he fell asleep and when he woke up he was inside the creek."

"You said they were socializing at a village, is there anything to indicate if these men were drinking."

ACP Joseph Myvett
"Yes there is but we are trying to confirm that."

Reyes was off duty at the time of the accident - but still in the private ambulance. Reports suggest that he and his passenger had gone off shift at 8:00 pm and may have been socializing. The other man, Herson Chavez didn't receive any injuries and police want to detain him for questioning.
