Castro Says Do The Diaspora, It's Easy!
posted (January 17, 2019)

The media also asked Edmond Castro about  the diaspora voting in the referendum and in general elections. As you know, PUP Caribbean Shores Representative Kareem Musa is preparing an amendment to the Representation of People's act to allow those living abroad to vote in the referendum in April.

Well, Castro says there's really nothing to it, if you are a registered Belizean living abroad and fit all the requirements to vote, then you can vote. It's simple.

Hon. Edmond Castro - Minister, NEMO
"We have many Belizeans living abroad as we call them the diaspora who already registered to vote, not just in the April 10th referendum but also in general elections. We know of many and those people who are living in the diaspora should contact the person who they want to vote for or which political party and see how they can facilitate them in the process in getting registered that they can come home and vote. Belizeans can come home and register, it's not different from you who want to vote in the referendum or the general election. You make sure that you meet the requirements of the 2 months period or if you decide to change address, you say well I no longer live in Ladyville, I live in Sandhill, so I would like to register. That's not a requirement just for people living abroad but also people living here. In the municipal election or general election, if I have voter in San Pedro, if I have voters in PG who are working there, it is my duty if they di come vote for me to get them to the polls. It's no different than if you living in New York or Chicago or Los Angeles. If I have voters who are working there, who went on vacation there, who are studying and going to school there, it's time to vote, I make sure I make the same arrangements for them to come home and vote as for those who are here that lives in Punta Gorda or living in San Pedro or working in San Pedro."
