Was Conch Shell Fire Started By Stove or Electricity?
posted (January 21, 2019)
Today 26 year old Candice Wade and her family are recovering after losing most of their possessions to a fire on Sunday. Wade was away from home when the fire occurred, but her mother Sharon Bennett was there. Bennett told us that she was cooking when she got distracted and took her eyes off the stove. When she looked back, the fire had was already out of control. And while that's her account, police had a different take. Here are both sides of that story:...

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City
"Sometime after 8pm police visited number 40 East Collect Canal where upon arrival they were met with fire department personnel where they observed a small plywood house measuring about 12x13 feet totally engulfed in flames. After a short while the entire plywood house was destroyed by fire and it's contents. Initial information is that the owner of the house Ms. Candiece Wade was at a neighbor's house when she was called out and somebody informed her that smoke was coming out of her residence. And upon her checking to the house then she noticed that the entire house was on flames."

Sharon Bennett - Mother of the homeowner
"I got distracted by a young man at the gate and I came and I peeked and that's when the fire just blazed and everything. I ran here for some water, but I never did make it."

"I lose everything, my toothbrush so I have to try pick up everything back. But like I say, what can I do. It happened already."

"I can't worry. The reason why I can't worry is because it's really sad, but it could have happened to me, you, him anybody it coulda mih happen to. I can't do nothing more mein."

"I can't do nothing more and then I feel so bad because that was my daughter's house. I was spending a little time there."

While Bennett says the fire likely started from a stove top, as you heard police mentioned that initial investigations have them suspecting an electrical issue. We'll have the fire department's report on the incident tomorrow.
