Conch Shell Fire Was Electrical
posted (January 22, 2019)
Yesterday we told you about the fire that left a Conch Shell Bay family without a home. There were conflicting reports about the cause of the blaze. The mother of the homeowner whose was there at the time said it was an unattended stove fire while authorities said it may have been an electrical issue. Today we have the official report from the National Fire Service...

Orin Smith, Station Officer, National Fire Service
"Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was the result of an electrical fault. The structure, I understand, was receiving an electrical drop that might have resulted in that fire."

Reporter
"Can you speak with some certainty what these drops can afford individuals to actually lose their homes in terms they are not safe?"

Orin Smith
"I have investigated several incidents involving an electrical feed whereas it resulted in the occurrence of a structural fire loss. Often what happen when they receive an electrical feed is that there is no grounding in place. There is no breaker that can prevent or quickly knock off the electrical power to prevent such an occurrence. So, any power surge you have is feed directly into the appliance that is plugged into that feed. Often the feed would overload, even circuit breakers for the structure that is doing the feed."

Smith and the National Fire Service urge citizens to take proper precautions in ensuring that electric appliances are plugged into appropriate and safe outlets.
