posted (January 25, 2019)
And while it seems like the Customs Department is prepared to do what it can to keep the borders safe, it's a task easier said than done. Here's what one Customs enforcement officer told us about the difficulties of the job...

Ronald Sanchez - Intel/Enforcement Officer, Customs and Excise
"We're seeing some major challenges at the moment. As you guys know the same roads that are being used for contraband are being used to transport illegal items such as drugs, weapons, ammunition even human trafficking so. It is increasing, the challenges are increasing and we're trying to step up our efforts as much a possible to see how we can combat the situation and stay on top of the game.

"The same people who are, well some of the same people who are committing the infringements with the contraband are the same ones who are involving their selves with the drug trade and stuff like that. It's really causing a serious impact on the department. Simply because we have to increase our efforts, we have to step up our efforts and we have to make sure we are ahead of the game. We have to try combat situation as much as possible, as best as we can so we need to implement new measures, new systems in place. We have to revisit how we approach the whole contraband game on a whole. It's a challenge for us and we're willing to take it on and se how best we can manage with the situation."

Sanchez says that his division is constantly looking at new ways to stay effective in the field.
