Elections and Boundaries Taking Re-Registration Drive to Coastal Village
posted (January 29, 2019)
The Elections and Boundaries office is trying to get folks registered for the April referendum - and so, the office is taking its show on the road. And, the first stop is Caye Caulker.

A public notice says that the Elections and Boundaries Department will be at the Caye Caulker Community Center, Caye Caulker Village from 6th to 8th February 2019 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to accept applications for registration.

Those who plan to apply to be registered must have originals of theirBelizean Birth Certificate, or Belize Nationality Certificate, along with a Social Security Card or photograph certified, stamped and signed by a Justice of the Peace, or a Belizean Passport, a Commonwealth Passport.

Earlier, this month, the chief Elections officer told the media that they really want to get voters out for the ICJ referendum and may open more polling stations:

Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer
"I want to ask person who want to vote in that referendum to remind them that the last day for them to get registered is 10th March, 2019."

Reporter
"In terms of the referendum, what differences will it have in terms of a normal election?"

Josephine Tamai
"For the referendum, as a department what we want to do is we want to have more polling stations open in order for us to reach out to the electors. Because in a normal election you would know that in terms of mobilization you have the political parties involved that they would mobilize the voters to get to the polling stations. But because in this case it's a national issue. At this point I cannot say if political parties will be willing to assist in terms of mobilization. People might view it as a positive, others maybe as a negative, but our role as a department is for us to reach as close as possible to the elector to give them an opportunity to come out and cast their votes."

Remember, if you want to vote in the April 10 ICJ referendum, MARCH 10th, 2019 is the CUT- OFF DATE to register.
