Bert Vasquez Back Arguing His Own Case
posted (January 30, 2019)
Bert Vasquez was back at court today. He was at the Court of Appeal trying to submit new evidence in relation to his attempted rape conviction. As we reported in December 2018, he will serve an additional 4 years for that crime which is apart from the 10 years he got for his first conviction of forceable abduction and aggravated assault of an indecent nature. Well today at the court of appeal - with Vasquez representing himself - the panel of judges agreed to accept his submission of new evidence. We spoke to his mother after the court session.

Debbie Vasquez, Mother
"Well what happened here today is that Bert put his appeal forward and he put in certain things that he wanted to from the beginning, the judges they allow it and he will have an appeal. They accept his submission. He should be back in March so he will have his appeal and he will have his say."

Courtney Weatherburne:
"So he is submitting new evidence, that is what he is submitting?"

Debbie Vasquez, Mother
"Yes he is submitting what he wanted to submit from the first time."

"Now Ms. D, do you think your son is going to get the assistance that he needs because we know like he was saying that one of the issues is that none of the attorney's wants to take his case."

Debbie Vasquez, Mother
"Well I hope so because he is defending himself and he knows his case good too so we tried several lawyers. We talk to several lawyers and some of them say yes we will do it and then when I call back or we try get in touch they are busy, they don't have time, time is too short."

"I think he will do his best, and I hope that he gets justice this time around."

Vasquez has to file his submission in writing and the court will address his submission on their next court session on March 4th.
