Was Zabaneh's Parcel 4670 Acquired By GOB?
posted (February 1, 2019)
We've been reporting on the Dion Zabaneh land debacle for weeks - and you've seen the fight over parcel 4670 - that lot which is being filled on the seabed.

But there's a new wrinkle tonight. It's a copy of the Government Gazette from February of 2007. It's a notice of land acquisition for a public purpose. And guess what parcel of land it's for?

We'll read directly from the Gazette. It says "all that piece or parcel of land being parcel 4670â€Â¦comprising 1.5 acres situated in the Caribbean shores registration section, Belize City."

That's the Primrose Gabourel lot - and the fact that it is gazetted in 2007 - would seem to suggest that government acquired it after the initial controversy in 2006, which is when Zabaneh told us that Government was trying to buy it - but he resisted:

Dion Zabaneh
"The government wanted to buy back the land from my mother and she does not want to sell. Instead she is filling up the land."

And since that interview in 2006, he has continued filling, but this gazetted notice would seem to suggest that it is no longer his land, and - if 4670 has been acquired, then he would have no rights to fill it. We'll keep following the story next week with the Lands Department.
