What the Elderly Need to Know About The ICJ
posted (February 1, 2019)
We're only a couple months away from the ICJ referendum vote, which means it's extremely important that all registered voters know the facts. That includes the elderly, who are often overlooked and disregarded. Today HELPAGE Belize hosted an ICJ forum for groups of older persons from around the Belize City and Ladyville area in order to make sure they can make an informed decision. HELPAGE's Director told us more about why an initiative like this is important...

Ivorine Bulwer - Executive Director, HELPAGE Belize
"First of all the ICJ session, it's important for us to have our older persons informed. Alright, they are part of the society, they are part of the history and they understood the whole challenges up to Independence. They were a part of this heads of agreement and all the struggles that Belize has experienced. And now here is the ICJ referendum. And it's imperative that they have a voice. It's imperative that the facts are also shared with them. And hence HELPAGE, you know, made the provision for our older persons to be informed. We had our first session October 27th in Belmopan where out 11 branches came together and we had our annual meeting and at the same time we had the opportunity to be informed through Mr. David Gibson. He provided us facts on the ICJ and it was a very interactive session. And here we are today. We have members from the Wesley senior group and the Ladyville senior group and HELPAGE Belize membership congregating together to be informed."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs partnered with HELPAGE to provide information for the event.
