Man Left Comatose After Beating
posted (February 4, 2019)
For about 9 days now, 58 year-old Nicholas Flores, a resident of San Ignacio Town, has been hospitalized in a coma at the KHMH. That's after he was savagely beaten by an unknown man on the Friday night of January 25th.

There is surveillance footage of the attack, which police are reviewing, and no one can figure out why his attacker, who appears to be a younger man, targeted him.

Those who've seen the surveillance footage of the attack tell us that he was sheltering from the rain at a bus stop near Boiton's Barbecue in Santa Elena. The video reportedly shows that this assailant immediately focuses on Flores, and then the assault commences.

He was found the following day suffering from severe injuries to the head and chest.

Police told us today what they know so far:

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch
"On the 26th January sometime around 12:15am San Ignacio Police responded to a male person at a bus shed in Santa Elena Town on George Price Boulevard, where upon arrival a male Hispanic person was seen in an unconscious state. His name was later learnt to be Nicholas Flores, 58 years of a San Ignacio Town address. Initial investigation and surveillance footage revealed that sometime around 11:40 p.m. on the twenty-fifth of January, Mister Flores arrived at the bus shed where he was sitting and he was approached by a male person who began beating him. As a result, he suffered facial injury. He was then transported to the K.H.M.H. where remains in a critical condition. Police is seeking one person in relation to this investigation, whilst our investigation continues."

"Sir has the surveillance footage been able to aid the police in identifying who this attacker is?"

ACP Joseph Myvett
"Not fully, but we are following other leads."

Of course, his family is outraged that this innocent man is now in a critical condition. Doctors don't know if he will survive the assault. Today, we got a chance to speak with his wife, Lydia Flores, at the KHMH:

Voice of: Lydia Flores, wife
"From what I know he goes to do an errand and he was to report back home at 7 in the night. I was waiting for him home and he didn't reach. He didn't reach home for the night. Next morning we got a call that I must go to the hospital because someone had beaten him up and they will bring him to Belize City because he is in a critical condition. When I came here I saw him on the bed. We spoke to the doctors and they say he is in a critical condition and they don't know if he will make it. Up to today he is still in a coma."

Reporter
'What areas of his body are doctors most concern about in terms his recovery?"

Voice of: Lydia Flores, wife
"His brain and his lungs."

Reporter
"We understand that you guys may have viewed footage of the attack itself. What does that video show of how Mr. Flores was assaulted?"

Voice of: Lydia Flores, wife
"It showed that the person came from Cayo and to where he was sitting down. Right there he attacked Mr. Flores."

Reporter
"Why did this person attacked Mr. Flores?"

Voice of: Lydia Flores, wife
"I don't know. Mr. Flores doesn't interfere with anyone. Everyone in Santa Elena and Cayo knows that he is not a trouble person. Everyone knows he is a friendly man."

The issue at this time, as we understand it, is that the surveillance video does not aid the cops in identifying the man who attacked Flores. They say that they are following up on other leads, and they hope to have some success soon.
