Opposition Leader Lashes FM for Nepotism
posted (February 7, 2019)
Today, Leader of the Opposition John Briceno joined the Public Service Union called out Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington for nepotism. As we have reported, Paulette Elrington - who is the Foreign Minister's daughter - made a request for leave to go study law, with full pay and all her allowances.

If approved, she would reportedly be earning just under 192 thousand dollars per year - her current salary as Foreign Officer at the Permanent Mission of Belize in New York City.

Today in Orange Walk, the Leader of the Opposition said it is a typical case of nepotism:

Hon. John Briceno, PUP Leader
"I don't know Miss Paulette and I wish her no ill, but I believe that while she may be entitle to a scholarship, but be able to ask and supposedly was being recommended - all the perks that she was getting while living in New York. For it to be paid for her living in Jamaica where first of all the cost of living is way lower - I think it's simply unacceptable. It shows a pattern of this UDP government where only the friends and families of the closely knit highly connected UDP officials that have been benefitting since 2008 under Dean Barrow and the UDP government."

A release yesterday from the PSU says, quote, "The PSU condemns the blatant and continuous display of nepotism being exhibited by the current administration." End quote.
