A Small Fire at Civic
posted (February 7, 2019)
The Belize City Civic Center's fire response mechanism was tested early this morning when a small blaze broke out at the multi-million dollar facility at around 1:00 am.

The Fire department, whose Cleghorn Street headquarters is a stone's throw away, dispatched a team of firefighters who quickly put it out. Today, police told us that the fire did no structural damage to the building:

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City
"This morning, just before 1, police were called to the Civic Center, where upon arrival, they met personnel from the Fire Department, and police observed a small room - a storage room - on the first floor of the Civic Center, which old drums and other materials inside of it. And apparently, one of the drums had ignited, and as a result, it just caused smoke, and a small fire inside of that section of the Civic Center. Fortunately, it was put out by the fire department, and there was no major damages done to it."

Responding to our request for comment, Apex Belize, which is the private manager of the Civic sent us a press release which says, quote, "Earlier this morning, the Belize City Fire Department responded to a call reporting a small fire at the Belize City Civic Center. Security staff at the Civic Center made the call after a fire alarm was activated in the building and they discovered a small fire coming from a garbage can stored under the building. The Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire and are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

Civic Center staff report that there is no damage to the building or structure and all the smoke from the building has since been cleared. All scheduled events will continue to be held at the Civic Center as previously planned." End quote.
