Opp. Leader Says Protect Potato Farmers
posted (February 7, 2019)
For the last two nights, we've been reporting on the plight of the potato farmer sin Orange Walk south. They have thousands of pounds of potatoes but have no market to take it to - because cheap Mexican potatoes are still on the shelves.

Today, Opposition Leader John Briceno said Government and the public has to put local produce first:..

Hon. John Briceno- PUP Leader
"The Ministry of Agriculture has, and if they don't have they are being negligent in their duties, a record of all the products that are coming to our market and they should know when and how much will be available to market. And, as such, they should decide whether they are going to give out permits or not. We know that a lot of politically connected UDP cronies have been getting these licenses at the backs of our agricultural farmers, our small farmers. We as a people need to eat what we produce and the we need to produce more of what we eat. So, I want to make that very clear. I find this unacceptable. I demand that the government do an investigation as to why these things continue to happen to our small farmers."
