Border Hostility: Melchoreño Shot at Customs

Right now, police are are looking for this man. He's Anibal Avila, a Guatemalan National who reportedly lives in Suchitan, Melchor, and according to police, he attempted to cross over into Belize from the Benque Border at around 2:30 this morning. When he was refused by customs officials, he reportedly pulled out a weapon and fired several bullets at the Customs Department's office at the Border.

Police told us told they intend to bring criminal charges against him for the incident, as soon as they can locate him:

"This morning, sometime around 2:30 a.m., customs officials at the Belize Western Boarder reported that around and about the same time, 2 Hispanic males approach the customs building. Both were on a motorbike. One person attempted to enter the building to cross, but he has been refused entry into Belize several times, and as a result, he then went back toward the Guatemalan border, where he turned around and fired several shots toward the direction of the customs building. This person is known to police as is he, in 2016, have been arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as he was found in the Free Zone."

Myvette told us that police are seeking the assistance from their counterparts in Guatemala to hopefully find Avila, so that they can charge him for the shooting.
