Elderly Man Survives Shot to Head in Buena Vista
posted (February 8, 2019)

Tonight, 66 year-old Alfredo Gonzalez, a resident of Buena Vista Village in the Cayo District, is hospitalized at the KHMH after someone shot him in the head and left him to die on the street.

Police say that at around 9:00 last night, villagers heard gunshots. When the cops arrived, they found Gonzalez on the ground bleeding from his wounds to the left side of his head, and his left ear.

Assistant Superintendent Alejandro Cowo, the officer commanding the Criminal Investigations Branch in Belize City, shared more with us at a press briefing today:

ASP Alejandro Cowo - OC, CIB Belize City
"There was another shooting at Buena Vista Village, in the Cayo Judicial District. Just after 9 p.m., police visited the said village behind some road within the village, where they found Alfredo Gonzalez, 66 years, from that said village, suffering from gunshot wounds to the body. Also, beside him, there was a bicycle a 9mm pistol. Mr. Gonzalez was rushed to the hospital, and thereafter, transported to Belize City Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he is still presently, in a critical condition. The information we gathered so far is that Mr. Gonzalez was riding his bicycle, heading home, when he was attacked by 2 male persons who fired the shots at him, causing the above mentioned injuries."

"The firearm that was found beside him, does that belong to him?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"It is something that we are still trying to establish, if it is for the assailants, or if it is his licensed firearm. We do not know yet."

Reporter
"Any information as to a motive?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"We do not have a motive up to now."

Reporter
"And no suspects."

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"No suspects, we know that nothing was stolen from him."

Reporter
"No one saw anything?"

ASP Alejandro Cowo
"It was just based on the shots that were fired that the neighbors called for police."

Reliable reports tell us that Gonzalez was found in possession of his wallet, which had 980 dollars cash in it, and so, police don’t believe that his attackers were trying to rob him.
