Stench Grossing Out Garden City
posted (February 14, 2019)
Residents living near north-western Belmopan have been suffering for some time now from what the Department of Environment is calling air pollution.

That's because there has been a foul smell that's been coming from that area, and the suspicion is that it is being caused by wastewater generated by one of the companies in Belmopan. The DOE says that multiple industries which generate this type of wastewater are in close proximity to each other, and they aren't yet sure which company is the culprit. Nevertheless, it is negatively affecting the quality of air that the residents of this side of the city are breathing in, and the DOE is collaborating with the Public Health Department to come up with a solution to the issue.

We asked Belmopan Area Rep. John Saldivar about it:

Hon. John Saldivar - Ministry of National Security
"Once it is clear that it is from them, I'm sure that they will deal with it. But, I believe they are claiming that it is not from their facility so, we will continue to look at that. I have been on this matter for several months, from the time that it had started. It had stopped for a little while, and it has come back. So, as soon as we can identify exactly where it is coming from, we will fix it."

A press release from the DOE says, quote, "…The medium-term solution includes the removal of the effluent to a more appropriate location for treatment." End quote.
