74 year old Elizabeth Rousseau and her 81 year old husband Gary Hawkes had come to Belize to retire at the Oasis housing community on the Consejo Road - one mile outside of Corozal Town. But, instead, she was killed on Wednesday night - the New Yorker died from a stab wound to the neck. A post mortem found her cause of death to be â€ËœTraumatic asphyxia due to trachea injuries due to stab wounds.'
The elderly American couple was at home on Wednesday night when an intruder broke in through the bathroom window. He stabbed them both, running off with a purse containing 1,200 dollars.
So far, police have not made any arrests. Notably, the couple had gone to the bank earlier that day, and residents believe someone may have been watching them. Police note that the intruder cut the electricity tot he home, so they suspect he may have been someone with inside knowledge of the home. The Oasis community has many homes under construction.
