Robber Claim Police Shot Him While Handcuffed
posted (February 19, 2019)
Last night we told you how police had shot one of two men who had allegedly robbed a Chinese grocery on Daly street in Belize City. Well, today, they were taken to court. 21 year old Kerun Miguel and 22 year old Jamar Neal hobbled into court; Miguel limping from the shot to the upper right leg, while Neal was seen with what he says is broken left jaw - allegedly delivered to him by police.

The duo appeared before Magistrate Khadeen Palmer where they were read a single charge of robbery with a firearm. Both pleaded not guilty to the charge.

And while remand is automatic for a gun offence, Magistrate Palmer asked the men to give her special reasons why she should grant them bail.

Miguel told the court that he had already surrendered when a police officer shot him in the leg after placing cuffs on him.

He told the court he has a 5 month old child, and while he admitted to committing the robbery, he claims he did it by force because someone pointed a gun at him and told him, quote, "let's go rob the place."

But Magistrate Palmer was of the view that neither of them gave the court any special reasons why she should grant them bail and they were remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until April 24, 2019.
