The PUP Belize City Council is trying to recover from a bruising and quite dangerous event yesterday. Multiple, reliable reports from within the council tell us that there was an angry confrontation which ended with one of the political staffers assaulting councillor Micah Goodin. The report we have received is that Goodin was choked in the stairwell.
Reports tell us that the whole uproar started when Goodin went to the office of the City Administrator querying the release of funds for a program he was organizing. But, there's quite a queue to get payment, and our reports say, the councilor was not happy being at the bottom of the stack for a project which the council caucus had already approved.
Our reports say this led to some heated words with the city administrator, Stephanie Lindo. Goodin reportedly stormed out, followed by a politically connected staffer loyal to Lindo, who confronted him in the stairwell.
Goodin received, but did not respond to our request for a comment or confirmation. We'll keep following it up.
But, for some historical perspective, we will add that since 2006, we have covered many such heated happenings in UDP, and now PUP Councils. This may have to do with two things: first, the advent of autonomy where councils generate more revenue, and more people want a piece of it; and, since 2006, we have seen more political newcomers and younger people in general offering themselves for municipal office.
