Taking A Stand
posted (February 22, 2019)

SASEA - That’s the name of  Audrey Matura’s movement against sexual violence. It called " Stand Against Sexual Abuse and Exploitation. And Matura is calling everyone out to stand with her on Monday at midday in front of Wesley College. Here is more about the demonstration.

Audrey Matura - Attorney
"Well basically the demonstration of solidarity so we are a double playing on the word demonstration because people think about demonstration as negative but you also can use it as a demonstration showing of solidarity but we intentionally did the double play because silently we are also demonstrating against all the violations against women and children especially recently we have had so many cyber bullying, revenge porn, cyber shaming, a lot of domestic violence. It is like all of them is a form of crime against women and children and unfortunately only female children as well. So we chose Monday because we were informed that there was an exam and we chose Monday in front of Wesley College but not to demonstrate against the college but rather to be there to be present to show solidarity with the student who was the one violated but also with the other students who must be going through a trauma."

"I don’t think it is everyone who are so evil. There must be other students who must be saying what if it happened to me or what is happening with the world or how are we under attack as young people and it should be something positive and that is our intention to keep it positive, to highlight the issue but at the same time lend support not tear down people."

Courtney Weatherburne
"And it seems the school is taking that approach as well because we understand the student has not been suspended it’s just the decision of the father to take her out because of this very difficult time."

Audrey Matura
"It is true, unlike what was reported by what we thought were reliable sources that she was suspended. I was contacted by two members of the family who explained the situation and why they had opted for a brief moment to take her out since then we have been in communication. I discussed it with them, they expressed their concerns and they wanted to know what it is about and after I explained everything, they were very supportive."

"At the same time we want to applaud the school for taking a different approach because anybody knows the history of Wesley College, they don’t think twice to put you out and they maintained a different modus operandi then but it is good to see that a school is taking a whole different approach, not saying we encourage students to do those things but they realize they have to be a support system, you don’t denounce the kids more, you don’t hurt them or victimize the kids more."

"Everybody is invited, anybody, just come out and show your solidarity, it is only for one hour. Assemble time is between 11:30 and 12:00. We will stand out there from 12 to 1. Then we have an extra half an hour to disperse. It is going to be silent, no loud speaker, no loud music no shouting but bring your placards and banners and bring something white, even if it is a white flag or white t-shirt, just white because we want to highlight the importance of peace, unity, love."
