Former CARICOM PM’s On Venezuela
posted (February 22, 2019)

The political situation in Venezuela remains very volatile, and many fear that it could be coming to a head soon with the imminent possibility of some type of US-led intervention. Â The White House has said all options are on the table â€" suggesting the possibility of military involvement.  And there could be a flashpoint this weekend when Venezuela’s us-backed opposition plans to push into the country with tons of humanitarian aid and medicine that Maduro's security forces have blocked.

That’s why a group of former Caribbean leaders, including Right Honorable Said Musa have issued a joint statement.  It says, quote, â€œWe, former leaders of… Jamaica, Belize, Barbados and Saint Lucia…express great disquiet about…the prospect of any action that is inconsistent with the principles of independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity….we are concerned that no action be taken that would jeopardise these fundamental principles of international law.â€￾

The statement adds, quote, â€œAcknowledging that there is need in Venezuela for humanitarian assistance, we believe that the delivery of such humanitarian assistance should not be politicised but should be conducted under the auspices of the United Nations according to normal procedures, including the participation of the Government and other authorities. We categorically reject the use or the threat of force as a means of resolving the situation in Venezuela.â€￾

The statement is signed by former Jamaican Prime Minister, P.J. Patterson, former Barbadian Prime Minister, Owen Arthur, Former Antiguan and Barbudan Prime Minister, Lester Bird, Belize’s Said Musa, and former Saint Lucian PM, Kenny Anthony.
