PG Reeling From Double Murder
posted (February 26, 2019)
Right now, Punta Gorda is on edge after the southern town witnessed a double murder last night.

PG is known for its serene, laid-back way of life, but it over the last few months, gangs and elements of the criminal underworld have been infiltrating the community and causing chaos. Residents tell us that tensions had been simmering for some time now, and last night, it reached a crescendo with the gun murders of Kevin Moro and Oscar Humes.

Our news team travelled there to find out what's driving the murderous violence. Daniel Ortiz reports:

Daniel Ortiz reporting The calm of Punta Gorda Town was disturbed once again by last night's double murders of 30 year-old Kevin Moro and 31 year-old Oscar Humes, aka, "Bubbles". Residents of PG tell us that Moro and Humes grew up basically like brothers. These 2 families are now forced to confront extreme grief.

Daniel Ortiz, reporter
"We know that there is a lot of rage and hurt."

Brandon Genus - Brother of Kevin Moro
"Yes man, definitely, anybody who had their family [member] taken away like that would feel rage, you know."

Last night, Moro and Humes visited this house on Main Street. We understand that it has been a regular hang-out location for some of the Town's men, they were not expected to be here for too long yesterday evening.

But, a masked gunman went looking for another target at this house, and Moro and Humes happened to be there at the wrong time.

Brandon Genus
"Yesterday, I was with my brother for a brief moment, for like about 20 minutes, hanging out."

And the next one, we were hanging out for at least more than a couple hours. Actually, he was with me just before they killed the man, two of them.

Brandon Genus
"According to what I heard on the streets, they went to kill an individual, and it looked like those guy just reached there. Because after they left me, they went there. My brother had gone to buy a knife at the store. He went and dropped off the knife, and from there, they were going to go fishing. It looks like they stayed there for a little too long."

Daniel Ortiz
"So, they got caught up in a gun attack that they had nothing to do with."

Brandon Genus
"Exactly, because my brothers have never killed anyone, and we don't even know about this killing thing in PG. Those young boys are just starting to pick up that little style there."

Police suspect that last night's attack was retaliation of some kind. It is uncertain at this time if it comes as a consequence of the January murder of Jordie "Beto" Flores, right here in PG, or another incident on Monday where 2 gunmen were caught in the act by cops while they were about to engage in some shoot-out here on Queen Street in PG. Police caught those 2 persons along with 2 weapons, but rumors are that these gunmen were looking for someone specific.

Brandon Genus
"Well, according to the streets, that's is what they are saying, but we don't know. We will allow the police to do their investigations. I know that they went for someone there. And at least they should know that these young boys are innocent. They should know who they're going to kill."

This once quiet town is now grappling with the type of gun violence that Belize City has become known for.

Brandon Genus
"I think the badness is coming, but we still stand a chance because people from PG are loving, and people from PG are ready for a change. And whenever people from PG decide to fight, we will fight, this entire town. And what we have to say about those badness that they are dealing with, those little young boys need to know that this is not the way, you understand. Because you will cry too; I'll cry; you will cry too. It goes around and hurts everybody, and we don't need that. So, right now, we just have to deal with it, and bury my brother, and bury 'Bubbles', and we'll move on from there."

And while they start making funeral preparations for Kevin and Oscar, these loved ones are trying to console themselves with pleasant memories of these men, who's lives were cut short.

Brandon Genus
"Kevin into into electrical [work]. [He's] into music, family, mein well. The most important thing is that he likes to have fun with everybody. He likes having fun."

Daniel Ortiz
"Did your brother have any specific nicknames that guys knew him as?"

Brandon Genus
"[Laughs] Yes, man."

Daniel Ortiz
"It seems that there is some interesting story behind that nickname."

Brandon Genus
"Yes, man."

Daniel Ortiz
"Tell us about it if you will."

Brandon Genus
"Well, Oh My God... Well, the man name Moro. So, they call him 'More Rum'."

Daniel Ortiz
"More Rum?"

Brandon Genus
"Yeah [Laughs]."
