Pink Eye Alert Across The Border
posted (February 26, 2019)
For those Belizeans who love to travel to Chet every other weekend or for those long holiday weekends better be mindful of an increase of pink eye cases in Mexico specifically in Yucatan and Quintana Roo. The Ministry of Health sent out a release saying "since the start of this year up to February 5th, 2019, Yucatan and Quintana Roo have recorded double the cases at this same time compared to last year. While at this time, the Ministry is not seeing an increase, persons are advised to monitor the situation, especially in the northern districts; keep updated through Ministry of Health advisories; and to continue proper hand-washing etiquette, which includes washing hands often with soap and clean running water to reduce the spread of this infection and any other contagious illness".

The release ends by saying "Pink eye can be caused by a bacteria or virus which can spread easily from person to person. Symptoms of Pink eye include redness in the white of the eye or inner eyelid, and watery eyes".

The Ministry is keeping a close watch on this situation and remains in contact with health authorities in Quintana Roo and Yucatan, Mexico.
