Dozens of Charges Hurled at Border Robbers
posted (March 4, 2019)
We have a full newscast tonight - including the chilling story of an 18 year old girl who was hacked to death in Valley of Peace...

BUT WE START IN Corozal... On last week Thursday and Friday's newscasts, we told you all about that lawless crime at the Corozal border where 6 men carried out a daring, early morning robbery of the money changers. These men held up the money changers and snatched over $15,000 in various currencies.

Police were at the location at the right time, and while the robbers were trying to get away, the cops set chase. That led to a shoot-out, but all 6 were detained, though they suffered various injuries.

Well tonight, we can show you 4 of the 6 men who police say carried out the heist. They are 29 year-old Eugene Myers, 23 year-old Zandon Myers, 23 year-old Randolph Crawford, and 21 year-old Joshua Hall. They have already been arraigned and remanded, and today, police told us about the charges that have been brought against them so far. Here's what the head of the National Criminal Investigations Branch had to say about the case today:

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"So far 4 persons have been charged, whilst the other 2 remain still admitted to hospital at the Northern Regional."

Reporter
"Are you able to share details on those charges?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Those persons are Eugene Myers, 29 years-old, Zandon Myers, 23 years-old, Randolph Crawford, 23 years-old, and Joshua Hall, 21 years-old."

Reporter
"Are they all from Belize City?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"No, they are all from Corozal. And the charges are, for Eugene Myers there are 7 counts of robbery, 2 counts of unlicensed firearm, and 2 counts of unlicensed ammunition. For the other 3 persons: Zandon Myers, Randolph Crawford and Joshua Hall, there are 7 counts of robbery, 2 counts of unlicensed firearm, 2 counts of unlicensed ammunition, and 12 counts of attempted murder. Other charges are still forthcoming as the investigation progresses."

Reporter
"The attempted murder charges are based on the shots that were fired at the officers?"

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Yes, yes they were."

Immediately after the robbery was foiled, family members of the accused persons commented to the press crying foul on several different instances. We put those allegations to Assistant Police Commissioner Myvette, and here's how he responded:

Reporter
"The family of these accused persons have alleged that police are mistreating - or have mistreated them, in that they were of the suspicion that they needed urgent medical attention, and that they should be transferred to the KHMH, but that they're still in police custody. Are you able to respond."

ACP Joseph Myvette
"No, other than to say that, during incident, or as soon as they came into custody, and certain procedures were followed, they were taken to the Corozal Community Hospital, and later transferred to the Northern Regional Hospital. From there, I believe 2 were released into police custody, and as a result of that, those 2 were charged along with the other 2 who were out."

Reporter
"Sir, I believe one of the family members also made the allegation that one of the guys picked up had nothing to do with that robbery."

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Yes, we heard that allegation too as well, however, as was previously mentioned in the press briefing, officers were on an investigation at the border, saw those persons getting into the vehicle, and the officers pursued the vehicle."

Reporter
"So, Crawford was inside the vehicle."

ACP Joseph Myvette
"Yes, he was."

Reporter
"Another allegation has been made presented to the press along the lines that these men, after caught them, supposedly they surrendered, but police still supposedly fired on them and injured them after they had already surrendered to the police."

ACP Joseph Myvette
"We, the police don't have any such information, other than to say that those persons were pursued. The vehicle crashed somewhere during their trying to escape, and as a result, they were pursued into the bushes."

Zandon Myers, Eugene Myers, Crawford and Hall have all been arraigned before a Corozal Magistrate, and they have been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until their next adjourned date, which is scheduled for May 20th.
