Belmopan Murder Attempt, But Why?
posted (March 5, 2019)
A 56 year old tour guide was shot last night in the Maya Mopan area of Belmopan -. Courtney Weatherburne spoke to him and area residents to find out what might have been behind the attempt on the life of Clement Mangar Senior:..

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
Clement Mangar's friends are perplexed as to why he was shot last night.

Voice of: Friend
"I don't know if he has enemies but he is a nice person to us neighbors because he always like hang out with us, anything he has he shares with us so I don't know why really they wanted to do this to him."

But Mangar seems to know. He is hospitalized at the Western Regional Hospital but he still spoke with us via phone this evening.

He said that around 8:30, he was heading to his home at the corner of Tul and Maya Mopan Extension Road. On the way there, he saw a man he knew on the side of the road. The man greeted him and then opened fire, hitting him twice, once to the chest and once to the side of the stomach. Fortunately, his daughter's house was only a couple blocks away and she rushed over to him.

Voice of: Friend
"We heard some gunshots but we didn't know what was happening so when we came out, I was going to untie my dog to bring him behind the yard, that is when I saw his daughter emotional on the street and I ask her what is going on and she was like they just shot my dad and I was like really, Mr. Mangar and I told her I heard some gunshots but I thought it was pop shots."

Mangar believes he was targeted as a result of an ongoing land issue in Maya Mopan involving a squatter, Nicolasa Cus. That is a story unto itself. But Mangar is grateful to be alive and he is recovering in the hospital.

We'll talk to Nicholasa Cus in a story that's coming up later in the news.

Mangar remains in a stable condition.
