Erasing Hate Crimes in Belize

For most of us here in Belize crime is crime, whatever the motive is.

But, there are different types of crimes, one being hate crimes, and it has several dimensions to it. A hate crime is a prejudice-motivated crime which happens when someone targets another person or persons because of their membership in a certain social group or race.

We don't hear much about hate crimes in Belize and one of the reasons is because there is no specific legislation that addresses these acts.

Courtney Weatherburne delves into the issue of hate crimes and what needs to be done to include it as a prosecutable offense in Belize's law.

The Special Envoy for Women and Children hopes to host a series of forums like this one on hate crimes.
